This is a large, shallow basket with a rectangular shape, named the “Vegetable Basket.”
It is available in three sizes: S, M, and L.
The basket is handmade by Marian, who lives in Podkarpackie in southeastern Poland, a region that borders Ukraine to the east and Slovakia to the south.
Willow branches come with bark in many shades, but for this basket the bark has been carefully stripped away. The weaving is done with these prepared “peeled willows.”Each basket is woven carefully, strip by strip, using wooden molds that match its shape. The peeled willow here has a light, orange-brown color, giving the basket a bright and refreshing look. The branches are boiled in a large kettle to soften them, and once the outer bark is removed, smooth reddish-brown rods appear. Both the uprights and the weavers are made of willow. Looking closely, you will notice each strip has its own character. While the willow is flexible, the finished basket is firm and sturdy. In some parts, the cut ends of the branches can be seen. Please handle with care, as they may be sharp at times. As shown in the photos, you may also notice thin peeling on the surface of the strips, slight warping, cracks, or dents. These are natural characteristics of the material and not defects. This is the rim of the basket. It feels smooth to the touch, tightly and carefully woven with no gaps. Here is the bottom of the basket, also showing strong and beautiful weaving.Even on the base, small cracks in the strips may appear. These, too, are part of the natural process of working with willow and should be understood as such. All three sizes, S, M, and L, have ample capacity. The strong yet supple willow branches are woven together beautifully. Now, let us look at each size in turn. This is the S size. Here it holds some face towels. With its wide, flat surface, the basket lets you see everything inside at a glance and makes it easy to take things out. This is the M size.It works well for keeping ingredients ready for cooking, and also for display in shops. This is the L size.It can hold plenty of fruit. It is also large enough to serve as a clothing basket.
For clothes, vegetables, or fruit.
It can also be used for children’s toys, or to keep together everything needed for school or nursery.
If you plan to keep delicate fabrics or clothing inside, placing a cloth at the bottom of the basket will help protect them from catching on the willow strips.
As this basket is shallow in form, it is also practical and attractive for displaying vegetables and foods, just as it is used locally in Poland.
You can lay out leafy greens in abundance, or fill it with root vegetables and seasonal fruits.
If soil or dirt gets on it, you can simply rinse it with water. We do not recommend leaving it outdoors for long periods, as UV light and the elements will speed deterioration; however, its sturdy construction makes it useful even at outdoor events.
We hope you will enjoy using it in many different ways. As the baskets are on the larger side, please check the dimensions carefully and choose the size that suits your needs.
