This is a handwoven willow shopping basket made in Poland, designed with handles. It comes with steel fittings so it can be attached to a bicycle.
The basket is handmade by Marian, who lives in Podkarpackie in southeastern Poland, a region that borders Ukraine to the east and Slovakia to the south.
Willow branches come with bark in many shades, but for this basket the bark has been carefully stripped away. The weaving is done with these prepared “peeled willows.”Each basket is woven carefully, strip by strip, using wooden molds that match its shape.
Although willow has bark, here the outer layer is removed and the prepared “peeled willow” is used for weaving.
The peeled willow here has a light, orange-brown color, giving the basket a bright and refreshing look. Both the uprights and the weavers are made of willow, finished in what in Japan is called a “gozame-ami”.Looking closely, you can see each strip has its own character. While the willow is flexible, the finished basket is firm and sturdy. The front of the basket is higher than the back.Seen from the back, you can notice how the front rises higher. Here is the rim. The upright willow rods are woven into the rim to finish it, adding an accent to the basket.Seen from above, the rim is solidly constructed. The handle uses a stainless-steel wire as its core. This wire runs through the basket sides and also through the bottom. The joint between handle and rim is the part most prone to damage in a basket, but here it is reinforced to withstand heavy loads. Two fittings are provided for mounting on a bicycle. They are made of steel and covered with black rubber for grip. The bottom is also woven from willow and built with solid strength. Here is how it looks when held in the hand.Even though it contains fittings and steel wire, peeled willow is light, so overall the basket does not feel heavy.
This is a large basket, spacious enough to hold plenty of shopping—vegetables, milk, seasonings, fish, or meat.
It is also useful for carrying eggs, cakes, or bread, when you don’t want them crushed or tilted.
Hook it onto your bicycle for shopping, and after checkout place your groceries directly into this basket. Carry it home on your bike as an eco-bag.
It also works for picnics or camping, carrying lunch boxes, bottles, and food.
As a natural material product, exposure to water, outdoor conditions, or direct sunlight may cause mold or faster deterioration. When using it as a bicycle basket, please avoid rainy weather, and even in dry weather do not leave it attached to the bicycle outdoors.
Attach it when you ride, and take it indoors with you when you finish. When not in use, it also serves well as a storage basket at home.
Please note: This item ships from Japan. As the buyer, you are responsible for any import duties, customs fees, or local taxes that may be charged in your country.
