One Handle Basket with Lid / Willow / POL 340217-1 ポーランド/やなぎ 蓋つきバスケット ルイ版
Here we introduce a basket with lids that open from both sides.
The basket is handmade by Marian, who lives in Podkarpackie in southeastern Poland, a region that borders Ukraine to the east and Slovakia to the south.
Willow branches come with bark in many shades, but for this basket the bark has been carefully stripped away. The weaving is done with these prepared “peeled willows.”Each basket is woven carefully, strip by strip, using wooden molds that match its shape. The peeled willow used here has a light orange-brown color, giving the basket a bright and refreshing look. The willow branches are boiled in a large kettle to soften them, and once the outer bark is removed, smooth reddish-brown rods appear. Both the uprights and the weavers are made of willow.Looking closely, you can see each strip has its own character. While the willow is flexible, the finished basket is firm and sturdy. At times, as shown in the photos, you may notice cracks or dents in the strips, but please understand these are natural features of the material and not defects. Here is the rim. The vertical willow strips are woven into it to finish.Seen from the side: the upper rim is the lid, the lower rim is the basket body.Three willow cores run through the center of the lid, bound tightly with split willow strips. This axis is the base on which the lids are attached. In total, four points on the lid are fastened with iron nails. The lids open up to this extent. The white tape-like part securing the lids is made of willow shaved thin. You may hear a scraping sound when opening the lids, but as willow is used instead of wire for the fastenings, this sound is only from the friction, so please do not worry. Here is the joint between the handle and the rim.The handle also uses willow cores, firmly fixed in place. The bottom is woven from willow as well, and built with strong durability. Here you can see the size when held in the hand.It is just the right size to use as a shopping basket.A large basket, spacious enough to hold vegetables, milk, seasonings, fish, or meat.
It is also useful for carrying eggs, cakes, or bread, when you don’t want them crushed or tilted.
It works well for picnics or camping, carrying lunch boxes, bottles, and food.
As the central lid axis is fixed, items are placed in and taken out from either side.
It is also recommended as a storage basket at home.
With its plump shape, this peeled-willow basket has a sense of stability. We hope you enjoy it in many settings for years to come.
