Stand Basket with Lid / Willow / POL 340218-1 ポーランド/やなぎ スタンドバスケット 蓋付き ルイ版
Here we introduce a distinctive basket with lids that open from both sides.
The basket is handmade by Marian, who lives in Podkarpackie in southeastern Poland, a region that borders Ukraine to the east and Slovakia to the south.
Willow branches come with bark in many shades, but for this basket the bark has been carefully stripped away. The weaving is done with these prepared “peeled willows.”Each basket is woven carefully, strip by strip, using wooden molds that match its shape. The peeled willow used here has a light orange-brown color, giving the basket a bright and refreshing look. The willow branches are boiled in a large kettle to soften them, and once the outer bark is removed, smooth reddish-brown rods appear. Both the uprights and the weavers are made of willow. Looking closely, you can see each strip has its own character. While the willow is flexible, the finished basket is firm and sturdy. At times, as shown in the photos, you may notice cracks or dents in the strips, but please understand these are natural features of the material and not defects. Here is the rim. The vertical willow strips are woven into it to finish.Seen from the side: the upper rim is the lid, the lower rim is the basket body. The lids fit neatly and open and close smoothly.Three willow cores run through the center of the lid, bound tightly with split willow strips. This axis is the base on which the lids are attached. The lids open up to about this extent. The lids are fastened to the center with spring fittings, making them durable for long-term use. There are four fittings in total on the lids. When you release your hand after opening, the lids fall shut lightly with a pat.The handle is also made with willow cores, firmly fixed in place. At the intersection of the handle and rim is a large decorative weave, serving as an accent for the basket.Another feature of this basket is the charming raised base on the bottom. Though plump in shape, the base keeps it from rolling and makes it stable when set down.Nails are used in the base to secure it to the basket. Here you can see the size when held in the hand.Because the bark is removed, the basket feels light for having lids.It works well as a small shopping basket. It is also enjoyable to carry as a tote.
With its lids, it also serves well as a storage basket.
As the central lid axis is fixed, items are placed in and taken out from either side.
A plump, round basket with lids and a handle—one to enjoy in many settings for years to come.
