This is a large oval basket made from hazel (Corylus avellana). Its seeds are well known as hazelnuts.
The basket maker, Mr. Stanisław Mroczka, inherited his craft from his father and works together with his family. He goes into the forest to carefully select and harvest hazel, prepares the material, and weaves—all entirely by hand.
Here we introduce the oval basket in three sizes.
The sizes are S, M, and L.
The hazel is heated in a hot stove, then peeled into thinner pieces to make weaving strips. The strips are not cut to uniform widths, but woven roughly in an alternating pattern. In Japan this is called “ichimatsu-ami,” used when weaving wide, flat strips such as walnut. On both sloping sides of the basket, the strips become thinner. The feel of hazel basketry is similar to itaya maple work seen in Akita, Japan. At times, depending on the material, cracks or breaks may be seen. These are not defects, so please understand this in advance. Here is the rim. Hazel branches are used as cores, wrapped round and round with strips. Here is the rim seen from above. Though the wrapping is rough, the wide, tape-like strips give stability.Handles are attached on both sides of the basket. On both side rims, the strips are wound around multiple times to fasten them. Here is the basket turned upside down. Its form resembles a silkworm cocoon.Though the strips are thin and tape-like, the basket is solidly finished and does not bend even when the bottom is pressed. The three sizes can be nested together. Now, let us look at each size. This is the S size.It is well suited for storing plenty of round root vegetables such as potatoes and onions. It can also serve as a toy basket for children.Or for keeping blankets and other fabrics. This is the M size.It works well as a basket for root vegetables, for harvesting in the home garden, or for collecting fallen leaves. You can also roll up T-shirts or towels, store them inside, and quickly find and take them out when needed. It also makes a good laundry basket for one or two people. This is the L size.It can be used for vegetables harvested in the garden or as a basket for gathering fallen leaves. It also works well as a laundry basket for three to four people.Because it rocks gently, it can even serve as a cradle for a baby. (Please take great care not to leave your child unattended when in use.)
When using it for towels, clothing, blankets, as a cradle, or for pets such as dogs or cats, we recommend placing fabric inside to prevent catching on the hazel fibers.
First as a cradle, then later as a toy basket for children, and as they grow older, as a laundry basket or towel holder.
In spring and summer for harvested vegetables, and in autumn for gathering fallen leaves.
This large hazel basket is one to use for many years, adapting its role to the growth of your family or the changing seasons.
Please choose the size that best suits you.
