Taiwan, located very close to Okinawa and the Yaeyama Islands, is known for its warm friendship toward Japan. Though geographically and emotionally close to Japan, it is said that in Taiwan as well, younger generations are beginning to rediscover the value of traditional crafts and handwork.
In Taiwan, as in Japan, many people once made bamboo crafts. However, with the large-scale influx of inexpensive mass-produced goods from mainland China, the number of artisans who make a living from bamboo work has greatly declined.
Amid such circumstances, in Taichung, central Taiwan, there is a craftsperson who, from a younger generation’s perspective, creates baskets and small items using Guizhu bamboo.
Ms. Yang, who once visited our shop bringing her own handwoven baskets, expressed deep respect for Japanese bamboo craft. She told us that she has long been devoted to this work and wishes to continue it in the future.
Her bamboo works carry a gentle warmth, reflecting her own soft-spoken nature.
These are coasters woven from Guizhu bamboo. Guizhu bamboo is similar to Japan’s madake and grows abundantly across Taiwan.
There are two types, each with a different weaving pattern.
This is the “Triangle” pattern type. The brown triangular shapes appearing between the white bamboo strips of the mutsume-ami are its defining feature. This one is the “Sunlight” pattern type. The white and brown bamboo strips overlap in an interlacing weave. The brown strips are colored by smoking the bamboo for about a week over the wood of longan—a fruit similar to lychee. The smoking process is done by local farmers. As with plant dyeing, Ms. Yang values natural coloring methods that use organic materials. The tone variations and shading are unique to natural dyeing, giving each piece a warm, natural depth. Each coaster is about 0.20″ thick. Here is the back side. They pair beautifully with a cup of warm tea,and also with cold drinks such as juice or beer. These coasters add a graceful accent to your tea or coffee time.
Because bamboo is heat-resistant, these coasters can also hold hot cups. However, due to the open weave, placing very hot items for a long time may leave marks on the tabletop. Please take care when using them.
For daily care, simply wipe off moisture or stains with a damp, tightly wrung cloth after use. If dirt becomes noticeable, wash gently with water using a tawashi brush or sponge, then dry thoroughly.
When storing, make sure the coaster is completely dry before placing it on a shelf or in a drawer.
These coasters blend effortlessly with any table setting—Japanese, Chinese, Asian, or Western. Their calm appearance complements every dining style.
When not in use, hanging them on a hook or wall makes for a delightful decorative accent.
Please choose the type that best suits your taste.
