This stand light is woven from akebi vine.
Akebi is a deciduous climbing shrub that grows naturally in the mountains, its stems extending as vines that twine around trees and other vegetation.
Its sweet fruit is cherished as an autumn delicacy, enjoyed not only by people but also by birds and animals.
In Nagano, there are also baskets made from “muki-akebi,” in which the bark is peeled off to reveal a soft grayish tone. This piece, however, is woven using the natural brown vine, with its bark left intact, preserving the appearance it has in the wild.
The frame of this stand light is made using a traditional silk reeling frame.
It was originally used for winding raw silk drawn from silkworm cocoons, and this one is constructed from six wooden pieces forming a hexagonal shape.
Onto this silk reeling frame, the basket maker wove akebi vine, completing the piece as a stand light. It is a design the craftswoman had created in the past but had not produced for some time— now revived specially for our exhibition.
This page introduces the stand lampshade named “Spinning.”
The basket section is based on a “sukashi-ami,” an openwork weave that allows light to pass through the gaps. The upper and lower parts of the basket are woven in “nami-ami,” a dense weaving pattern, while decorative weaving adorns the rim. Each pattern is woven carefully and precisely, the result of skilled craftsmanship. The stand light stands gracefully on six slender wooden legs, giving it a clean and balanced look. Here is the view from above. The wooden frame faithfully recreates the structure of the original silk reeling frame once used in daily life. Please take care not to remove the wooden peg shown in the photo (white circle). Removing it will cause the frame to come apart, and the woven akebi cover will detach as well.Looking inside, you can also appreciate the weaving pattern. This is a single-bulb type. Note: The light bulb is not included. Please use an LED bulb with an E26 base. The wooden frame was recreated by a trusted carpenter at the craftswoman’s request. It is sturdy, smooth to the touch, and built with care. Please note that slight wobbling may occur due to the handmade nature of the piece. This does not affect its use.The lamp features a hand-operated inline switch.Upon request, it can be changed to a foot switch type. If you wish to have a foot switch, please indicate this in the remarks section when ordering. If nothing is specified, the lamp will be delivered with the standard inline switch.
Standing tall and graceful, the light gently streams through the open weave of the akebi vine.
This stand light has a presence unlike any other— its very form is striking, and the play of light and shadow it creates is equally unique.
It glows softly and warmly beside you, offering gentle light for moments of quiet rest.
The vines used for weaving are carefully selected to ensure consistent thickness and length.
The result—woven from high-quality materials—is breathtaking in both strength and refinement.
The silhouette cast around the base of the stand is softly luminous, creating a gentle and dreamlike atmosphere. We recommend using an LED filament bulb, which broadens the range of illumination and enhances the shadow patterns on walls and ceilings. The silk reeling frame, too, glows faintly as it catches the light.
The height of the stand reaches approximately to the waist of an adult woman (model height: 5′3″). The power cord is approximately 78.74″ in length.
The akebi vine retains its natural texture, just as it grew in the mountains. Its rich gradations and calm hues are endlessly soothing, inviting a sense of quiet and ease.
Even when unlit, the light’s presence is comforting—a piece that gently warms the heart.
A truly one-of-a-kind work. Because the number of silk reeling frames is limited, this is also available only in limited quantities. We hope you will take this opportunity to make it part of your home.
We look forward to receiving your order.
