Fruit Basket with Handle / Madake Bamboo / Oita-JPN 110702-1 大分県/真竹 手つき果物かご ルイ版
In Oita Prefecture, bamboo craftsmanship is widely practiced, making use of the abundant madake bamboo that grows naturally throughout Kyushu.
While white bamboo crafts—made by heating, boiling, or sun-drying freshly cut green bamboo to remove its oils and color—are well-known, this basket is made from unprocessed green bamboo and features a handle.
The surface of the bamboo is finished using the migaki technique, in which the outer layer is lightly shaved to achieve an even tone.
Compared to leaving the natural skin intact, this process creates a more uniform and refined color throughout the basket, enhancing its visual harmony.
Over time, the color of the bamboo also deepens more richly than that of unshaved bamboo with its skin intact.
The rim and handle are polished, while the main body of the basket retains the natural bamboo skin. The beautifully even tone, despite the natural surface, shows that only clean, blemish-free bamboo is carefully harvested, stored, and selected before use.The points where the basket and handle connect are reinforced with bamboo nails and bound with vines of tsuzurafuji. Here is the inside of the basket—clean and well-finished.The rim is finished in a “maki-buchi” style, using young, flexible bamboo tightly wound for strength.Seen from above. The basket features a wide, thin bamboo handle that extends deeply to the base on both sides. The edges are finely chamfered for a smooth touch. The bottom is woven in the “kiku-zoko-ami” pattern, named for its resemblance to a chrysanthemum flower. This basket uses an especially dense weave, with more bamboo strips than usual, resulting in a solid, durable base with almost no gaps. This basket is said to be a familiar design that has long been seen in Oita. Some people may find it brings back memories of a basket they once knew. It’s perfect for holding citrus fruits such as mandarins, or for keeping onions and condiments on the table. It also works well as a small harvest basket. You can pick vegetables, fruits, or herbs grown on your balcony or in your garden and carry them straight to the kitchen or dining table.
Because it has a handle, the basket can be lifted easily without straining the rim, allowing it to last for many years of use.
Although green bamboo crafts are often associated with a crisp and strong impression, the baskets made by this artisan have a gentle, warm presence that seems to reflect the maker’s character.
This versatile and well-balanced basket invites you to enjoy using it in many different ways.
