In Oita Prefecture, bamboo craftsmanship is widely practiced, making use of the abundant madake bamboo that grows naturally throughout Kyushu.
While white bamboo crafts—made by heating, boiling, or sun-drying freshly cut green bamboo to remove its oils and color—are well-known, this basket is made from unprocessed green bamboo and features a handle.
The surface of the bamboo is finished using the migaki technique, in which the outer layer is lightly shaved to achieve an even tone.
Compared to leaving the natural skin intact, this process creates a more uniform and refined color throughout the basket, enhancing its visual harmony.
Over time, the color of the bamboo also deepens more richly than that of unshaved bamboo with its skin intact.
This shopping basket is made from green bamboo, with tsuzurafuji vine used for the rim and handle. It is woven in a “gozame-ami”, where horizontal strips are alternately interlaced with slightly wider vertical strips. From the evenness of the weave, you can sense the meticulous preparation of the materials. The polished surface is beautiful, and each strip is carefully chamfered for a smooth touch. The lower section of the basket, like the base, is woven with thinner strips of bamboo. The rim is finished in the “maki-buchi” style, using young and flexible bamboo tightly wound around the edge. Here is the rim as seen from the inside of the basket.Even along the steep curves on both sides, the wrapping is precise and seamless, showing beautiful craftsmanship. At the points where the handles connect to the basket, bamboo nails are used, secured further with tsuzurafuji vine. This detail also adds a decorative accent. Here is the inside of the basket—clean and neatly finished. The handle is made from three wide, thin bamboo strips that extend deep to the base on both sides. The edges are carefully chamfered, giving a smooth and comfortable grip.At the top of the handle, tsuzurafuji vine is used to bind the three bamboo strips together securely. A small amount of adhesive is applied between the bamboo and tsuzurafuji for added strength. The bottom of the basket is woven in the “kikuzoko-ami” pattern, named for its resemblance to a chrysanthemum flower. While this technique is usually used for round bases, this basket features a rare elongated oval shape.Compared to standard kikuzoko weaving, this basket uses more bamboo strips, resulting in a strong, tightly woven structure with very few gaps. The oval form fits comfortably against the body and is easier to carry than a round basket, while also allowing for better storage of items when shopping. This basket can be used both as a shopping basket and as a hand-carry bag for going out.It is not overly large, but just the right size for everyday shopping or picking up a few extra items.
When not in use, it also works beautifully as a storage basket indoors, or even as a flower basket.
Here, black jetbead, clematis, and chervil larkspur are arranged inside.
Although green bamboo crafts are often associated with a dignified and powerful impression, the baskets made by this artisan have a gentle, warm presence that reflects the maker’s care and character.
Enjoy watching the color of the green bamboo deepen and change over time.
