Located in Kyūshū, Japan, Oita has a diverse natural environment with both ocean and mountains, which provides many materials suitable for weaving baskets.
First, Green bamboo crafts using Madake bamboo, mainly from Beppu city, and then White bamboo crafts are popular.
Green bamboo and White bamboo work have one thing in common: they are made by splitting thick Madake bamboo, which is suitable for working with, and then stripping the inner parts, thinning them out or making them uniform in width, and then cutting them into pieces.
However, some materials undergo a different process than Madake bamboo. These baskets are woven using a thin bamboo called ”Okame-bamboo”.
The distinctive feature of Okame-bamboo baskets is that they are not made by splitting bamboo or otherwise making strips.
Usually, bamboo crafts are made by splitting the bamboo, peeling off the inner body of the skin, and adjusting the width of the bamboo to make a “strip” for weaving.
If delicate fabrics are to be placed in the basket, We recommend that you place a separate piece of cloth inside to prevent snagging.
Also, some bamboo fibers may be seen on the bottom of the basket. Avoid leaving the basket moist for long periods of time. After use, wipe it dry with a dry cloth and dry it well before using it again.
It’s thin, but woven without splitting, so it is solidly made.
A fresh green color in a simple woven pattern. Please enjoy the whole Okame-bamboo basket, supple to the touch.

However, here, the leaves from the nodes are dropped, the thickness is aligned, and weaving begins.
Because the thin bamboo is woven without splitting it, the basket is finished entirely with the outer skin of the bamboo, both outside and inside, and thus repels water.
The weaving is characterized by several overlapping arches.
This is a view of the rim from the inside. It is equally lovely.
The four corners of the basket are also gently curved.
The strips used for the top rim go through a turning string that runs along the side and ends up at the bottom rim.
Occasionally, you can see traces of bamboo branches coming from the nodes of the bamboo. This is also unique to Okame-bamboo.
Bamboo fibers may also be seen where the strips are raised or folded back from the bottom.
The bottom.
The foot of the basket allows for good ventilation.
Because Okame-bamboo is made directly from native trees, there are individual differences in the size of the baskets, and the size of the baskets may fluctuate by 5cm (1.97″) or so, depending on the delivered items.
When used as a clothes basket, it has enough capacity to hold clothes for one or two people.
It would also be a good place to keep blankets, stoles, knits, etc.
