These baskets are woven from palm leaves, traditionally made in the region of Chettinad in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The local people have revived the once nearly extinct techniques through the activities of a non-profit organization, and the income from the products now provides an additional source of income for the women engaged in farming.

Both the lid and body of this tissue case are woven using palm leaves.Palm leaves are used in natural (cream-colored) and black.Black is a chemical dye for the leaves.This is a distinctive weaving technique in which small triangular patterns are arranged in rows.The lid can be closed by placing it over the body basket. The height of the body can be adjusted due to the rather tight fit of the lid and body.The part that the lid covers is a simple plain weave, while the lower part of the basket is a triangular patterned woven.The outlet is made by sewing fabric together from the back side.
