These baskets are woven from palm leaves, traditionally made in the region of Chettinad in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The local people have revived the once nearly extinct techniques through the activities of a non-profit organization, and the income from the products now provides an additional source of income for the women engaged in farming.
The Kottan series is an original design by Suno & Morrison, a Japanese designer.
The baskets are created in collaboration with the makers, including the size of the baskets, weaving method, and color scheme.

The baskets are woven using palm leaves. It is a distinctive weaving technique with a pattern of small triangles. Green and orange strips are used, each strips being made of palm leaves dyed with a chemical dye.The glossy sheen of the leaves can also be seen. The lid can be closed by placing it over the body basket. The height of the body can be adjusted due to the rather tight fit of the lid and body.Separate use of the lid and the body would also be a good idea.If the lid is closed too tightly and too deeply, it will be difficult to open later, so it is best to close it lightly in the middle. This is the underside of the bottom of the basket. The basket itself is soft and has no reinforcement to support the bottom, making it unsuitable for carrying heavy objects (which may cause damage). When holding the basket with items inside, handle it by supporting the bottom with both hands. The strips sticking out of the rim as shown here are the strips used as the core material of the basket. If you are concerned about it, please push it back lightly with your finger.
