These baskets are woven from palm leaves, traditionally made in the region of Chettinad in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The local people have revived the once nearly extinct techniques through the activities of a non-profit organization, and the income from the products now provides an additional source of income for the women engaged in farming.
The Kottan series is an original design by Suno & Morrison, a Japanese designer.
The baskets are created in collaboration with the makers, including the size of the baskets, weaving method, and color scheme.

The bag is a combination of basket and fabric, with shiny silk as the fabric.It is available in two colours, “Insert Natural” and “Insert Black”, and in two sizes, “S” and “L” respectively.The “Insert Natural” type (left) has cream-coloured rims and fabric, while the “Insert Black” type (right) is black-coloured.The L size also has ring handles on both sides of the bag.This is the “Insert Natural” type. It is woven with two different coloured strips (natural and black) of slightly different widths, which are woven on top of each other. The black is made from palm leaves dyed with a chemical dye.Natural coloured strips are used as a base, with black strips on top.This is the “Insert Black” type. This is also woven with two different coloured strips of slightly different widths overlapping each other.Black strips are used as a base, with natural strips on top.Occasionally, the top overlapping strips of the basket may peel away from the edge of the basket.
