This is a Shimekazari called “Three Beat Together”, and it is an impressive hanging decoration with three rings, a bundle of straw, and an ear of rice.
A rhythm played on three instruments (large hand drum, small hand drum, and Japanese flute) to enhance the music and performance of Noh plays in Japan.
The three beats (three beats in unison) are in harmony, so it means that the three important elements are in place, or (by extension) that all conditions are ready.
Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.
The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.
The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.
Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.
Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.
This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling. The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.
The well-balanced shape is pleasant to look at for a long time and makes you feel refreshed.
It is truly a harmonious structure that has “Three Beats Together”.
If you look at the shape, it looks like the number “8”, “infinity”, and a “gourd”.
Gourd is said to absorb evil spirits and purify the air, and because of its constricted shape, it is also said to seal in the evil spirits it has absorbed, and it has been used as a charm to ward off misfortune and bring good luck.
How about displaying them outside or inside the entrance, where evil spirits from outside are likely to enter, or in places such as the living room, where there is a lot of people and air coming and going?
It looks like we’ll be able to welcome the new year in a clear and refreshing place.
We also recommend that you display them and enjoy them throughout the year, even after New Year’s Day.
In order to keep the Shimekazari in good condition, please do not leave it in the cardboard box after it arrives, but open it and take it out immediately.
If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box, please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.
After use, you can either take it to the shrine’s collection point or dispose of it as burnable waste. If you dispose of it as burnable waste, please make sure to follow the waste classification rules of your local government.
A neat, spreading shape created from a single rope with a core.
Looking at the strength of this decoration, it seems to promise that the small efforts and preparations we make every day without fail will bear fruit, and that beyond that, they will bloom into a spectacular form like the ears of rice in this decoration.
Hope you that next year will be a fruitful year with all three beats coming together, with the beat resonating pleasantly.

At first glance it may be difficult to see, but if you look closely you will see that this Shimekazari is made using a single rope, and is drawn in one breath, like a single stroke of the brush. The three different-sized rings that are created in this way are likened to the three beats of the Japanese drum. This is a “single Shimenawa(sacred rope)”. The rope gradually becomes thinner from the base “moto” (the base of the straw) to the tip “ura” (the tip of the straw). (This is a photo of a Shimekazari “Gobō”.)First, we’ll take a look at the base, or “moto”, which is the beginning of the straw rope. It’s neatly bundled and cut to size. Then, to the large circle below. It forms a beautiful circle. The flow of the straw rope is even, and you can feel the strength of the core.Next, move on to the slightly smaller circle above. According to the maker, in order to make a well-shaped circle, it is important that the base straw rope is well-balanced in terms of length and thickness, and that it is braided neatly. Finally, it leads to a small circle in the middle. The three circles that intermingle seem to represent the way the sounds of the different instruments blend together beautifully. In the center, there is a dried rice ear. Since many grains of rice grow from a single seed, it also contains wishes for a good harvest and prosperity. This one comes with a hanging strap made from rice straw. You can easily hang it up on a hook or something similar, which is also a nice feature.A beautiful rope-braided Shimekazari. The pleasant smell and the smooth texture of the straw rope make you feel the high quality of the straw itself.Because the base of the straw rope is high-volume (thick), the decoration will lean slightly to the right. Please understand.
