This is a Shimekazari called “Myōga broom”.
This is an original design hanging decoration that is modeled on the Myōga (Japanese ginger) vegetable, which is often used as a condiment, and a broom, which can be quickly taken out and easily cleaned.
Myōga(Japanese ginger) is believed to be a plant that brings good luck because its name is the same as the word “Myōga(冥加)”, which means “blessings and grace bestowed by the gods and Buddha without our realizing it”. For this reason, it is often used as a motif in family crests and the crests of Shinto shrines.
The broom has long been associated with warding off evil spirits, as it is used to sweep away dirt and dust, and it has also been a popular good-luck charm.
This is a small and cute Shimekazari made from such good-luck charms.
Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.
The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.
The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.
Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.
Rice harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.
This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling. The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.
The broom is also said to bring good luck, as it means “to sweep in” happiness. It’s a small size, about the size of your palm, so it may not be very gorgeous, but it’s a size that you could casually display in the entrance of an apartment building.
It’s also a good shape for those who are decorating Shimekazari for the first time.
We also recommend that you display them and enjoy them throughout the year, even after New Year’s Day.
You can also hang it in your entrance like a doorbell. It’s a fun way to decorate your home without feeling too formal, like you would with an ornament.
Why not display it in your favorite place in the house, such as the kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom? It’s compact, so you can display it anywhere you like. It will fit in with any room, regardless of style.
If you hang it from a hook or something, it will sway gently in the wind, and you can almost hear the clear, tinkling sound of a bell. It feels as if the bell is calling out to the gods.
You can display several of them in various places, or display two of them side by side like in the photo. Hang them as a pair, like the tassels that hold up the curtains on a large window.
Even if a place is a little lonely on its own, decorating it with a pair of items makes it feel more complete.
In order to keep the Shimekazari in good condition, please do not leave it in the cardboard box after it arrives, but open it and take it out immediately.
If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box, please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.
After use, you can either take it to the shrine’s collection point or dispose of it as burnable waste. If you dispose of it as burnable waste, please make sure to follow the waste classification rules of your local government.
Looking at this Shimekazari, it feels like a talisman that brings small happiness to our everyday lives.
When you feel the changing of the seasons in the flowers that bloom by the roadside or in the wind that blows.
When you can clean a place that you don’t usually get around to.
When you buy a nice little sweet on an ordinary day.
When you can sleep a little longer on a holiday morning.
When your favorite song comes on at a store you happen to be in.
When you suddenly notice this Shimekazari, it makes you want to tell it about the good things that happened that day.
May the blessings of this “Myōga broom” bring you happiness and prosperity in the coming year.

This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling. The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.
It is about the length of an extended hand, and is a slender size. This is woven using the “Myōga knot”, one of the ways to tie Mizuhiki(decorative Japanese code), applied to straw. According to the maker, it uses two straw ropes twisted together to make one rope(double ropes).Other Shimekazari we introduce is made with three ropes(triple ropes). Since it is small and slim like this, three ropes are too hard to weave, so it is made with two ropes. This is the tassel (fringe) part. This is made to look like a broom. The tip is cut straight, giving it a crisp look. The tassel head is made to look like a peony flower, and is knotted and covered like a hat. It is very detailed and carefully made. The top has a loop, so you can hang it up or display it as is.If you thread another string through the loop, you can adjust the position of the decoration to your preferred balance.By using a separate strap, you can enjoy the loop at the top as part of the decoration.
