This is a Shimekazari called “Three Shrines”.
These are often used to decorate the home shrine, and come in three sizes: small, medium and large.
Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.
The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.
The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.
Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.
Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.
This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling. The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.
For use on a household shrine. Also suitable for use on room fittings and walls. The paper streamers and tape will be attached when delivered. The color of the paper streamers and tape goes well with the rice straw.
It can be displayed as is, giving a bright and cheerful impression.
In order to keep the Shimekazari in good condition, please do not leave it in the cardboard box after it arrives, but open it and take it out immediately.
If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box, please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.
After use, you can either take it to the shrine’s collection point or dispose of it as burnable waste. If you dispose of it as burnable waste, please make sure to follow the waste classification rules of your local government.
Wishing you a peaceful and good year.

Three straw bundles are hung from a rope that has been braided into a straight shape. The rope is said to resemble a cloud, the straw hanging down is said to represent rain, and the paper streamers are said to look like lightning. The rice straw hanging down is wrapped around the straw rope. The base is wrapped with gold tape. This thick part is called the “wave”. There are two ways of braiding straw rope, ‘right-handed’ and ‘left-handed’, and the rope used in Shinto rituals is generally left-handed. However, even in Shinto rituals, it seems that there are cases where the rope is right-handed, depending on the region or the person making it.Shimekazari has a “moto” and a “ura” part, and this part is called the “moto”. The word “moto” means base or root. This is attached so that the “moto” is on the right side facing the kamidana. This is the “ura” side. It means “tip”.There are three sizes of “Three Shrines”.This is small size. It is a size that can be easily displayed on the door of a room, etc., other than a home shrine. This is medium size. Up to medium size, it fits well in the size of a general door. This is large size. This size is larger than the width of a typical door, so we recommend displaying it on a wall.
