The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.
The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.
Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.
Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.

Three straw bundles are hung from a rope that has been braided into a straight shape. The rope is said to resemble a cloud, the straw hanging down is said to represent rain, and the paper streamers are said to look like lightning.The rice straw hanging down is wrapped around the straw rope. The base is wrapped with gold tape.This thick part is called the “wave”. There are two ways of braiding straw rope, ‘right-handed’ and ‘left-handed’, and the rope used in Shinto rituals is generally left-handed. However, even in Shinto rituals, it seems that there are cases where the rope is right-handed, depending on the region or the person making it.Shimekazari has a “moto” and a “ura” part, and this part is called the “moto”. The word “moto” means base or root.This is attached so that the “moto” is on the right side facing the kamidana.This is the “ura” side.
