This is a Shimekazari called “Small Ring”.
Ring ornaments are a type of Shimekazari that can be seen in various places. They are small and cute, small enough to hold in the hand, but they are high quality ring ornaments that have been carefully and firmly woven.
Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.
The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.
The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.
Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.
Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.
This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling. The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.
“Small Ring” is the most versatile of the shimekazari because it can be displayed in a variety of places.
They are mainly displayed in the kitchen, bathroom, toilet and entrance hall.
It is said that the role of the “Small Ring” is to thank and appreciate the “tools” that have worked hard for a year.
It may differ depending on the house and the lifestyle of the people, but let’s be thankful for the important tools that have been with us for a year.
