This is a handled lunch basket.
In the past, smaller versions of this type were commonly used as lunch boxes for children in the Kyushu region.
In various parts of Kyushu, it has also been known as a “tofu basket,” used when going out to buy fresh tofu.
Since tofu is delicate and easily damaged, it was often kept separate from other items—carried in its own dedicated basket like this one.
Kyushu is known for producing high-quality Madake bamboo, and this lunch box is also made from white bamboo—Madake harvested in Kyushu and treated to lighten its color.
White bamboo is created by boiling fresh green Madake and drying it in the sun to remove oils and moisture, resulting in a pale finish.
The whitening process evens out the color, reduces the risk of insect damage, and tightens the bamboo fibers, making the material more durable.
This page features three types of handled lunch baskets: Medium, Large, and Large 2-tier.
The Medium and Large sizes are single-tier baskets, while the Large 2-tier consists of two stacked layers, as shown in the photo. The baskets are woven using a technique known as Hishigi-ami. One of its characteristics is that the horizontal bamboo strips alternate between wider and narrower widths, interlaced with the vertical strips. The rim is made from slightly thicker white bamboo, and both the vertical strips and the rim are secured with brass nails. The brass blends beautifully with the tone of the white bamboo. The tips of the nails are bent inward on the inside of the rim to prevent them from touching your hands, but please handle the basket with care just in case. Here is a view of one of the corners from above—you can see how the hard bamboo has been cleanly and beautifully bent. The parts that connect the basket and handle are joined using large brass nails. In the Large 2-tier type, the handle is attached to the rim of the lower basket. The handle is also made from white bamboo. The center part—where your hand naturally rests—is slightly thicker, making it more comfortable to hold. The handle can open wide, reaching down toward the basket’s base. The lid closes by fitting onto small “claws” on the rim of the basket. It’s easy to imagine that achieving such a precise fit requires real skill—and indeed, the way the lid and body align so perfectly is remarkably satisfying. The base is made using a strong technique called Ikada-zoko-ami. In addition, a raised platform made from vertical bamboo strips is built into the underside, allowing for airflow and helping to keep the bottom dry. Now, let us introduce the sizes, starting from the smallest. This is the Medium size.Even the Medium size offers a generous capacity. It’s large enough to hold lunch for two to three people. It also works well for storing tea or sake sets, or other servingware. This is the Large size.Though it’s a single-tier basket, it can hold a B5-sized sheet laid flat, and has enough room for a lunch for three to four people. Here is the Large 2-tier type. This one also fits a B5-sized sheet flat inside. By separating side dishes and staples between the two tiers, it can hold a lunch for four to five people. You can also use the lower basket on its own with the lid—turning it into a single-tier basket when needed.
The carefully prepared white bamboo is woven in a straight, rhythmic pattern, creating a sense of calm just by looking at it.
In addition to carrying lunch, it can also be used to store amenities, or serve as a medicine box or sewing kit. It’s also nice that you can simply carry it as is, whenever you need.
These white bamboo handled lunch baskets come in larger sizes— please choose the one that best suits your needs.
