This basket is called the “Square Basket” and is made from white bamboo.
White bamboo refers to green madake (Japanese timber bamboo) that has been harvested from the mountains, then boiled or sun-dried to draw out its natural oils and mellow its color. The result is a pale, slightly golden bamboo with a refined, even tone.
The name comes not only from its square shape, but also from the square pattern of its weave.
The technique used here is called yotsume-ami, a style that connects simple square-shaped openings in a neat, repeating pattern.
In the world of bamboo craft, yotsume-ami is often said to be the kind of pattern a beginner might naturally weave if handed bamboo strips and asked to “just try something.”
It’s likely one of the simplest and most fundamental weaving methods.
This page features the Square Basket in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large— each woven using the yotsume-ami.
Earlier we described this weave as simple and fundamental, but one craftsperson once told us that it’s precisely this simplicity that makes it a challenging technique. Great care is required to keep each square opening consistent in size. The surface of the white bamboo shines with a natural gloss. As you may know, bamboo has nodes, or joints, along its length. In this basket, two of the four sides are made using strips with no visible nodes—a thoughtful detail that highlights the smooth, beautiful skin of the bambooThe rim of the basket is wrapped and secured with rattan. On all sizes, the rattan binding is applied at nearly even intervals, and the corners of the basket curve gently around. Here is the base of the basket. The faint lines visible here and there are the natural nodes of the bamboo.A quiet rhythm of small, square openings emerges across the weave. It brings a subtle sense of calm and order. In that way, this basket feels like a perfect fit for organizing things—both visually and practically.
The luster of the bamboo, when touched by natural light or indoor lighting, has a striking beauty—something that makes you pause and look. And the soft shadows cast by the open weave on floors and walls are just as captivating.
Even when empty, this basket brings quiet beauty to a space. Its smooth bamboo surface and square lattice pattern offer something lovely to look at, all on their own.
This is the small size. It’s ideal for storing tea bags, dried goods, or pantry items. This is the medium size.Slightly larger and taller, it’s well-suited for holding a jug or water bottle. You might also like to cover the top with a cloth to keep out dust. The way glass items show through the weave adds another layer of beauty. This is the large size. It’s big enough to hold about four folded bath towels or oversized towels. The open shape makes it easy to put towels in and take them out—and lets you see at a glance what’s inside.
One of the joys of square baskets is how neatly they line up when placed side by side.
You can group several of the same size for a clean look, or mix different sizes to create a more playful, decorative effect.
The basket’s openness strikes a perfect balance— just enough to let you glimpse what’s inside without revealing everything. For the person who placed the items, it’s helpful to be able to tell what’s stored with just a glance.
The square grid pattern gives off a clean, modern feel, while the pale, calm color of white bamboo blends easily into any room—whether traditional or contemporary. This basket is especially recommended for those who are new to using woven baskets.
Practical, yet refined—the Square Basket is a well-balanced piece.
It will be useful in your kitchen, living room, bathroom, or any space in your everyday life. Please choose the size that suits you best.
From Beppu, back home—with bamboo craft
In Beppu City, Ōita Prefecture, there is a vocational training center dedicated to bamboo craftsmanship. Each year, about ten new artisans set out from here, carrying with them the skills and spirit of the craft.
Students come from all walks of life, spanning a wide range of ages and backgrounds, each drawn to the world of bamboo for their own reasons.
One such craftsperson trained here after years of living and working between Nepal and Japan. Since graduating, they have continued their practice in Ōita, handling not only the weaving but also the preparation of their own materials— harvesting fresh green bamboo and processing it into white bamboo, before beginning each basket.
