In Kagawa Prefecture, located on the island of Shikoku, daily life unfolds within a rich natural setting—stretching from the calm Seto Inland Sea in the north, across the Sanuki Plain, to the Sanuki Mountains in the south.
This environment has long supported traditional bamboo crafts and winnow-making.
Even today, some makers continue to pursue this work as their livelihood, dedicating themselves to refining their skills.
This white bamboo accessory basket is made by one such craftsperson.
It comes in two sizes: small and large.
White bamboo refers to green madake that has been boiled or sun-dried to remove oils and moisture, lightening its color.
This process helps reduce insect damage, tightens the bamboo fibers, and creates a more even, refined tone on the surface.
This basket is made using the hishime-ami (diamond weave) technique, which forms a repeating diamond-shaped pattern. It highlights both the clean, striking geometry of the weave and the natural surface beauty of white bamboo. The rim of the basket is framed with white bamboo, which is secured at regular intervals with rattan binding. Here is the underside of the basket. Chikaradake—reinforcing bamboo strips—are set in a cross pattern to support the base. The darker brown parts of the strips are bamboo nodes. These are intentionally placed on the underside to make the basket look cleaner when viewed from the side. However, for the two strips that run into the sharply angled corners, the nodes are shifted to the sides rather than the bottom, to avoid breakage. This thoughtful placement reflects an understanding of bamboo’s natural characteristics—particularly how nodes can snap more easily—and helps ensure the basket’s durability.Inside the basket, the four corners are also neatly finished. Now let’s take a look at each size. Here is the small size. It’s perfect for gathering small items in places like the living room counter or by the bedside in your bedroom. You can also use it to store cups or glasses. The airy weave of the basket complements tableware beautifully, creating a clean and balanced look. It’s also a great size for keeping bottles of skincare, body lotion, or oil neatly in one place. Here is the large size. It’s great for storing seasonings, snacks, or dried goods in the kitchen. You can also use it to organize towels or clothing. The inside of the basket is cleanly finished, with the bamboo strips neatly arranged. There’s hardly any snagging to worry about.
A compact, refined basket with a clean and thoughtful design.
The weave is spaced just right—not too open, not too tight— gently concealing what’s stored inside.
Even when empty, the shadows cast by the pattern in the light offer a quiet sense of calm. We hope you enjoy the subtle beauty and character this basket brings.
