Oval Basket with Feet & Handles / White Bamboo / Tochigi-JPN 350101 栃木県/真竹(白竹) 麻の葉バスケット 小・大 2サイズ
This is a handwoven basket made from white bamboo, complete with handles.
There are two main methods for processing freshly harvested green madake bamboo into white bamboo: the wet method and the dry method. This serving tray uses bamboo prepared by the wet method, in which the bamboo is boiled in a cauldron, then wiped to remove the natural oils that rise to the surface.
The finished white bamboo becomes denser and stronger, with a natural sheen. Over time, it gradually ages into a deeper amber tone, adding warmth and character with use.
On this page, we introduce two sizes of this basket: small and large.
The basket is woven based on the asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern, using a combination of thicker and thinner bamboo strips for contrast and structure.By using thicker bamboo strips along the horizontal lines, the overall structure is reinforced, giving the basket added strength and stability. The weave is neatly arranged, creating a continuous and harmonious pattern. This is the rim of the basket. A thick bamboo strip forms the edge, which is then wrapped with peeled rattan in a steady, rhythmic spiral.Seen from above, the rounded rattan wrapping has a gentle sheen and serves as a beautiful accent to the basket. This is where the handle connects to the basket. The handle itself is thick and sturdy, made with braided hemp cord for added strength and texture. This is the handle connection as seen from inside the basket.A nice bonus: the two handles make it easy to lift and move the basket—perfect for tidying up or quick repositioning.A thick reinforcing bamboo strip runs along the base for added strength. This is the underside of the basket. It features four attached feet, which lift the base slightly off the floor—allowing for air circulation and making it well-suited for use as a laundry or changing room basket. The feet are made by bending bamboo strips, which extend all the way up to the rim. There, they are securely fastened—so there’s no need to worry about them coming loose. The two sizes can also be nested together for easy storage.
Now, let us introduce the two available sizes.
This is the small size. Here’s how the small size looks when held— to give you a sense of its scale. When used as a laundry basket, the small size can hold clothing for one to two people. It also works well as a temporary basket for holding freshly laundered clothes before folding. Or place it beside the sofa as a side basket for books and magazines you’re in the middle of reading. This is the large size. Here’s how the large size looks when held—to give you a sense of its scale. When used as a laundry basket, the large size can hold clothing for two to three people. It’s also great for storing blankets, cushions, or other cozy household items.
The inside is carefully finished, with smooth bamboo strips that feel gentle to the touch. Clothing is unlikely to snag, but if you plan to store delicate fabrics, placing a thin cloth lining at the bottom is a thoughtful precaution.
Use it as a laundry basket for towels and clothing, or place it beside the sofa to hold blankets and other cozy items. It also works well as a guest basket for holding bags or belongings.

Connecting Ōtawara’s Bamboo Craft with Contemporary Life
Ōtawara City in Tochigi Prefecture is known for its high-quality bamboo and long-standing tradition of bamboo craftsmanship. Two bamboo artists from this region have even been honored as Living National Treasures of Japan.
There is an artist who learned directly from two figures he respectfully calls his masters— his own father, a bamboo craftsman, and another artist who also holds the title of Living National Treasure. Having trained under them, he carries forward the legacy of Ōtawara’s bamboo craft, while quietly opening a new path within that tradition.
Before turning to bamboo work, he worked in design and spent time backpacking through the Middle East and Europe. His creations reflect not only the refined techniques of traditional bamboo craft, but also something fresh—perhaps shaped by the diverse experiences that have formed his unique perspective.
He creates works of quiet elegance and practical beauty— pieces that enrich daily life through their thoughtful craftsmanship and enduring quality.
