These are lidded baskets made from palm leaves. It comes in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large.
The basket has a gently puffed rectangular shape, and is made from a flexible natural material.
The base is woven from natural palm leaves, retaining their natural cream color. You can also notice a subtle sheen on the surface of the leaves. The lid, in this “Insert” style, is woven by layering two slightly different widths of palm strips—one natural, and one black. The black strips are palm leaves dyed with chemical dye.The lid is designed to be placed over the basket base. Since the lid fits quite deeply, the height can be slightly adjusted depending on how you close it.Of course, the lid and the basket base can also be used separately for different purposes. If you press the lid down too firmly, it may become hard to open—so a gentle closure at a mid-point tends to work best. Here is the underside of the basket. Since the basket itself is soft and the base is not reinforced, it is not suitable for carrying heavy items—doing so may lead to damage. When lifting the basket with items inside, please support the bottom with both hands. Some marks like these may appear on the basket. These are part of the natural process of production and do not affect use. They are not considered defects.Occasionally, a narrow strip on the upper layer may lift slightly near the edge. If it bothers you, you can trim the lifted part with scissors—just like you would with a loose thread on clothing. Please note that this is not considered a defect, and we appreciate your understanding in advance. Now, let us introduce the three sizes. Here is the Small size. It’s ideal for storing accessories, glasses or sunglasses, watches, or other small personal items, and also works well as a case for stationery.Or, fill it with a tea strainer and tea leaves to create a little tea set basket. (Photo: Natural type / Small)Here is the Medium size.It works well as a basket for makeup items, or even as a compact sewing box.In this example, it’s used to store brushes and hair care products. And this is the Large size.Great for storing towels, handkerchiefs, socks, or undergarments. You can also use it as a document box for notebooks and pens. When the palm leaf catches the light, it gives off a soft, natural glow with a gentle sheen —bringing a quiet elegance to the piece.
Light and softly textured to the touch, the calm tones of natural cream and black allow it to blend effortlessly into any space.
Please choose the size that best suits your needs.
— Basket named “Kottan” —
Baskets made from palm leaves have traditionally been crafted in Chettinad, a region in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
They were originally used as vessels to carry offerings or gifts during rituals, and were often given to friends and guests as a sign of invitation or agreement.
Though the craft once came close to disappearing, it has been revived through the efforts of local people and nonprofit organizations. Today, the income from these baskets provides an additional source of earnings for women working in agriculture.
This particular Kottan series features original designs by Suno & Morrison, a brand based in Japan.
Each basket is developed in close collaboration with the artisans —adjusting size, weaving techniques, and color combinations together.
