This is an oval-shaped basket with a handle, made from hazel wood (Corylus avellana). The seeds of the hazel tree are widely known as hazelnuts.
The basket maker, Stanisław Mroczka, learned the craft of basket weaving from his father and now creates these pieces together with his family.
They personally enter the forest to carefully select and harvest the hazel wood, then prepare the materials and weave each basket—every step of the process is done entirely by hand.
After harvesting the hazel branches, they are warmed by the fireplace before being split. After the initial rough splitting, the pieces are further thinned, relying on the craftsman’s sense of touch to guide each delicate split. With the strip resting on the knee, the thickness is refined using a hand tool.Brilliantly white, gleaming strips are prepared for the making of a single basket.
Here, we present this handled basket in three sizes: S, M, and L.
The hazel wood is heated in a high-temperature stove, then split into thinner material to create the weaving strips, or higo. The strips are woven without making their widths uniform, alternating vertical and horizontal weavers in a loose, open style. The texture of hazel craft is matte, resembling itaya maple work found in regions such as Akita, Japan.Shown here is the rim, made with a hazel branch as the core, around which hazel strips are coiled in tight, continuous wraps.Seen from above, the rim is wrapped in a loose, casual manner, yet the use of wide, tape-like strips gives it a sense of stability.Due to the nature of the materials, you may occasionally notice knots, areas of peeling, cracks, breaks, or slight protrusions of the weaving strips as a result of the production process. These are not considered defects, and we kindly ask for your understanding in advance. This is where the handle is joined to the basket. Unlike Japanese basketry, which typically begins weaving from the base, this basket starts from this cross-shaped section. This section is firmly secured first, and from here the weaving is gradually expanded outward. This is the handle section. You may notice temporary securing tape beneath the hazel, but this is part of the standard construction. We kindly ask for your understanding. When turned over, it forms a gentle arc, reminiscent of a cocoon. With its generous depth, this basket holds more than you might expect. The softly rounded lines, distinctive to this hazel basket, give it a gentle and welcoming charm.Let us introduce each size in turn.
