For over 30 years, Hiromi Kiriyama has been creating bamboo crafts rooted in the traditions of Kyushu and Japan, producing a wide range of everyday tools that serve real needs in daily life.
The baskets shaped by his hands carry a quiet beauty that fits seamlessly into modern living, while remaining deeply honest in their purpose as daily-use objects.
Kiriyama’s baskets are rooted in traditional forms passed down through generations, but each one is thoughtfully reinterpreted—through careful attention to proportion and weaving technique— into something uniquely his own, made to suit the way we live today.
Each piece is shaped through a quiet dialogue between the perspective of the user and the thoughtful ingenuity of the maker.
Crafted using only fresh green bamboo and vine from “Tsuzura-fuji”, each piece reveals a striking clarity of form—made all the more compelling by its simplicity.
The remarkable variety of shapes, all born from the same materials, draws the eye in with quiet fascination.
For the September edition of our “The One Table” exhibition series, we will be showcasing and offering for sale a selection of new works by Hiromi Kiriyama.
Among the new pieces are renewed and revived versions of works that Mr. Kiriyama once created in earlier years, resulting in a lineup that gently weaves together past and present.
As another special feature, 1basketry will be introducing vintage and antique items for the very first time —presented alongside the exhibition and available for purchase.
The vintage items we are sharing are not antiques in the decorative or collectible sense, but rather everyday tools that may once have been used in someone’s life. These objects carry the gentle character that only time, use, and quiet companionship with people and nature can create.
Each piece is still perfectly usable—ready to become part of someone’s life once again.
These are tools that bring calm and quiet joy—whether in the daily kitchen, at tea time or mealtime, or simply as part of your interior space. Just like our fresh green bamboo baskets, we hope they’ll find a place in your everyday life and be put to good use.
Mr. Kiriyama himself has a deep fondness for vintage items. Many of his baskets seem to echo the quiet presence of form found in old tools and vessels.
We invite you to come and discover both his new works and the vintage pieces on display. We look forward to welcoming you.
While there are limits on the number of guests and the duration of each visit, we’ll do our best to ensure that you can take your time viewing the works—even within our small space— and that you have a chance to speak with Hiromi Kiriyama as well. If you would like to ask Mr. Kiriyama something in English, the shop owner(Tomotake) will be happy to assist with interpretation—please feel free to ask.
We hope you’ll enjoy your visit at a relaxed pace, for as long as your time allows.
As each time slot is limited, we kindly ask for your consideration and cooperation if other guests are present during your visit— especially when speaking with Mr. Kiriyama. We appreciate your thoughtfulness in sharing the time and space with others.
During these two days, you’ll also have the chance to watch Mr. Kiriyama demonstrate how he carves fresh green bamboo chopsticks by hand. Freshly carved bamboo chopsticks will be available for purchase as well—please feel free to take a look if you’re interested.
