This Bread Basket is made from green bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines. On this page, we introduce it in two sizes: small and large.
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color. This basket is woven with strips of green bamboo whose outer skin has been shaved thin.
By shaving the outer skin, the hard enamel-like layer is removed, giving the surface a softer appearance. It also adds a natural sheen, enhancing its beauty. Another characteristic is the way it gradually changes over time, turning evenly into a warm amber color.
The rim and handle are secured with Chinese moonseed vine, adding an accent to the finish.
The entire basket is woven carefully and with strength. It is made with the gozame-ami technique, in which thin strips are regularly woven around the vertical ribs. The rim is finished with shaved bamboo strips and Chinese moonseed vines, giving a result that is both beautiful and strong.Seen from above, the refined finish is clear. Even with its thick rim, the bamboo nodes are neatly aligned. The basket on the left is the small size, and on the right is the large size.In both sizes, the inner bottom of the basket is finished with the ikada-bottom style.Looking at the base, there are bamboo strips in an X-shape for reinforcement, along with four additional braces set into the sides.Wherever you touch, the surface is so smooth that you might forget bamboo can splinter.Due to the nature of Chinese moonseed vines, peeling of the outer skin may be seen, as in the photos, but this is not a defect. Please note in advance. From the base, it gently widens toward the opening, giving it a charming shape. Maintaining such soft curves is said to be difficult.
Now let us introduce each size.
This is the small size. This is the large size.
As the name Bread Basket suggests, it is ideal for carrying bread. It can also be used to take lunches or food along to the park.
The handles are set parallel to the long sides, making it convenient to carry.
The small size can hold lunch for one to two people. The large size gives the impression of being able to hold lunch for two to four people.
Seen from the short side, its rounded form adds charm. While Mr. Kiriyama’s baskets often give a solid impression due to the hardness of green bamboo, there are also pieces like this that trace gentle curves.
Because the height of the basket is slightly lower, it is easy to put things in and take them out. The large size can even be used as a magazine rack.
Please check the sizes carefully and choose the one you prefer.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
Please note: This item ships from Japan. As the buyer, you are responsible for any import duties, customs fees, or local taxes that may be charged in your country.
