These are spice baskets made from green bamboo. On this page, we introduce two sizes: baby and small.
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color. This basket is woven with strips of green bamboo whose outer skin has been shaved thin. Shaving the skin reduces the appearance of scratches or spots on the surface, while adding luster and enhancing its beauty. Over time, it gradually changes into a warm amber color, evenly and beautifully.
The rim and handles are bound with Chinese moonseed vines, adding an accent to the finish.
The entire basket is woven carefully and with strength. The bamboo is so smooth that you might forget it can splinter. The rim is finished with shaved bamboo strips and Chinese moonseed vines, resulting in a finish that is both beautiful and strong.Seen from above, the refined finish is clear. Even with its thick rim, the bamboo nodes are neatly aligned. The basket body and the handles are joined with bamboo nails. While some baskets are decorated with Chinese moonseed vines, this piece is intended for use on a table, so it is finished simply without vine reinforcement. That said, the bamboo strips of the handle extend firmly into the weave of the base, so the handle will not come loose easily.Looking at the base, six reinforcing strips of bamboo are inserted. The corners, prone to damage, are protected by these reinforcing strips. The inner bottom is finished in the ikada-bottom style, woven with both skin-on strips and polished strips of bamboo.
Now let us introduce each size.
This is the baby size. The baby size holds spice jars that are often used in daily life. This is the small size. The small size is just right for a tea set with tea leaves and a tea scoop.
As the name Spice Basket suggests, it can be placed on the dining table to hold spices, or used to keep a tea set. Both sizes also look charming when carried by small children.
Please choose the size you prefer.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
