This large Flower Gathering Basket is woven with strips of green bamboo.
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color. This basket is woven with strips of green bamboo whose outer skin has been shaved thin. Shaving the skin reduces the appearance of scratches or spots on the surface, while adding luster and enhancing its beauty. Over time, it gradually changes into a warm amber color, evenly and beautifully.
Wherever you touch, the surface is so smooth that you might forget bamboo can splinter.
Its striking feature is the sleek, elongated form, standing at about 21.65″ in height. It is woven in the gozame-ami technique, in which thin strips are regularly woven around wide paired vertical ribs, resulting in a smooth finish. The body is cylindrical overall, but near the top it narrows sharply with a natural yet crisp constriction. At the rim of the opening, shaved bamboo strips are used, giving a finish that is both beautiful and strong.Seen from above, the refined finish is evident. Chinese moonseed vines, evenly spaced and secured around the rim, add an accent. For the innermost curve of the rim, the inner part of the bamboo is used, since bending the skin inward could cause it to crack.Looking at the base, six reinforcing bamboo strips are inserted, giving it a stable construction. The corners, prone to damage, are protected by these reinforcing strips.
This basket was created at the request of practitioners of ikebana, designed so that flowers can be placed loosely inside and carried over the shoulder.
The shoulder strap is made from palm fiber rope, and its length can be adjusted by the user.It is woven together with the bamboo into the basket itself. At the base, the strap passes through to the inside. Formed into a loop, it allows the palm rope from above to be tied securely. At the back of the rim, there is also a shorter hemp cord, so flowers can be placed, carried, and displayed all in one motion. Here is the image of it hung by the hemp cord. Here is the impression of its size when held.It harmonizes beautifully with wildflowers or branches gathered from the fields and mountains. The basket and the flowers seem to bring out the best in each other.
This basket is at the stage where the green has faded moderately and a light amber tone is emerging.
Confronted with its presence and scale, your eyes may first be riveted, even overwhelmed. It invites reflection on what the word “interior” truly means.
Gathering, carrying, displaying— this basket will serve as a practical companion for those who love flowers.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
