This basket, called an “Ayu Basket,” is made from green bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines.
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color.
It is the shape once used for actual ayu (sweetfish) fishing, characterized by its narrowing from the base toward the mouth. It is woven with the hishime-ami technique, which creates a diamond-shaped pattern.A single thick, wide reinforcing strip runs vertically, with its ends secured by Chinese moonseed vines. This reinforcing strip also curves around the back.At the base, the reinforcing strip is pressed and fixed with thin bamboo. The beautiful weave continues throughout. The rim is finished beautifully and with strength. For the innermost curve of the rim, the inner part of the bamboo is used, since bending the skin inward could cause it to crack. The smaller the diameter of a circular type, the more difficult this rim work becomes. The rear reinforcing strip is fire-bent and woven inward.Below the rim, a palm-fiber cord is attached, used for hanging on a wall or tying around the waist. It is delivered tied, but is long enough to wrap once around the waist. Some natural cracks in the bamboo can be seen on the base, but please regard these as part of the material’s character.
This Ayu Basket was originally made in the northern Kanto region, and has been revived by the maker, Mr. Kiriyama. Long intrigued by the distinctive basket he once encountered long ago, he set out to recreate it.
Mr. Kiriyama’s baskets are usually made with strips of bamboo shaved to remove the outer skin. In this case, however, since it was reproduced from an old basket at hand, it retains the skin as in the original.
Here, an inner container was placed inside the basket and filled with black lilies. The basket pairs well with flowers and leaves, each enhancing the other.
In an age when many baskets are disappearing, it is heartening to see one revived. It is also a joy when something practical and excellent as a tool is, at the same time, beautiful as a form.
Although few people may now use it for actual ayu fishing, its presence brings a quiet, nourishing character to an interior space.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
