This is a lidded basket woven from shaved strips of green bamboo. The basket itself is finished with bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines. On this page, we present the basket named “Spice Basket with Lid Round.”
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color. This basket is woven with strips of green bamboo whose outer skin has been shaved thin.
By shaving the outer skin, the hard enamel-like layer is removed, giving the surface a softer appearance. It also adds a natural sheen, enhancing its beauty. Another characteristic is the way it gradually changes over time, turning evenly into a warm amber color.
At the handle joints, Chinese moonseed vines are used, adding an accent.
The entire basket is woven carefully and firmly in gozame-ami, where horizontal strips are woven regularly around vertical bones. The rims are finished by wrapping shaved bamboo strips. Seen from above, the refinement is clear, with almost no gaps. Both body and lid are finished with the same beauty. The handle and body are mainly joined with bamboo nails, and further bound with Chinese moonseed vines. The handle is smoothly beveled, giving it a polished, glossy feel.Looking at the bottom, you will see X-shaped reinforcing bamboo, plus four pieces inserted at the sides as braces. The inner bottom is finished with the ikada-bottom style. This method is often used for baskets meant to hold heavy items, so you may use it with confidence. Here is the basket with the lid removed. Even the body alone seems practical enough. And here is the lid. Even on its own, it works perfectly well as a basket. The base of the lid is woven in kikuzoko-ami, resembling a chrysanthemum flower. Though shallow, it is as solid as the body and feels beyond the idea of a “lid.”Turn it upside down, and the beauty remains. The way the vertical bones spread out in a radial pattern is pleasing, and the thick reinforcing bamboo adds reassurance. From the base to the rim, the basket widens gently, making it easy to put things in and take them out.
Both body and lid are finished with rolled rims, giving a clean look. At the same time, the rounded shape makes it endearing.
As its name suggests, it is perfect for keeping favorite spices on the table.
You may also enjoy using the two baskets separately: the body to hold tea bags in the kitchen, and the lid to hold sweets for the day.
Though small in size, the addition of a lid broadens its uses. This round spice basket with lid can be placed anywhere in the home—please enjoy keeping it close at hand.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
