This is a large lidded basket woven from shaved strips of green bamboo. The basket itself is finished with bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines, and is one of the Garden Basket series. On this page, we introduce the large slim type with a lid.
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color. This basket is woven with strips of green bamboo whose outer skin has been shaved thin. By shaving, the hard enamel-like outer surface is removed, giving the bamboo a softer look and a glossy, enhanced beauty.
Over time, it gradually changes into a warm amber color, evenly and beautifully.
The rim and handle are bound with Chinese moonseed vines, adding an accent to the finish.
The entire basket is woven carefully and firmly. Its smoothness makes you forget that bamboo is usually a material that can splinter. The rim is finished with bamboo processed in a method called masawari. It is accented with Chinese moonseed vines. The handle of the body is made from three bamboo pieces, secured in the center with Chinese moonseed vines.Looking at the base, you will find X-shaped reinforcing bamboo, plus four braces inserted along the sides. The handle feels gentle in the hand. The base is finished in ikada-base, sturdy and designed so contents do not easily spill. Here is the basket with the lid removed. And here is the lid. It is finished with the same refinement as the body, and almost beyond the idea of a “lid.”At times, you may enjoy using the body and lid separately for different purposes.
The Garden Basket series was created at the request of gardeners who wished to carry both their tools and lunch in one basket.
Of course, the ways to use the basket are up to you.
You may also enjoy changing how you use the body and lid from time to time.
As a lidded Garden Basket, it can carry a generous lunch or drinks for the garden, the park, or even camping.
Although it is a large basket, its slim depth makes it easy to carry, fitting naturally along the body.
We hope it will serve you well in many different scenes of daily life.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
