This is a tall, cylindrical basket handwoven from fresh green bamboo.
Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color. This basket is woven with strips of green bamboo whose outer skin has been shaved thin.
By shaving, the hard enamel-like outer surface is removed, giving the bamboo a softer look and a glossy, enhanced beauty.
Over time, it gradually changes into a warm amber color, evenly and beautifully.
On this page, we introduce a straight-sided form called Long Basket.
It is made with the gozame-ami technique, in which thin strips are regularly woven around the vertical ribs. You can see how carefully, and at the same time powerfully, it has been woven. The rim is bound with Chinese moonseed vines. The rim is finished with bamboo processed through masawari. The Chinese moonseed vines also add a subtle accent. The base is woven in kiku-zoko, tightly finished so that even small items will not slip through. It can also be used as a waste basket. It has a solid, substantial size.Suitable for storing rolled posters, rugs, umbrellas, or other long items. It also makes a fine display piece. (Please avoid placing wet umbrellas inside, as moisture may cause mold.)It has a graceful presence, even when left on its own.You may also use it as a flower basket, arranging seasonal flowers inside.
The natural character of green bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines enhances the beauty of grasses, flowers, and branches.
When I once spoke with Mr. Kiriyama, the maker of this Long Basket, he told me that a basket is a vessel that “embraces” what it holds. This basket indeed conveys that sense of gentle embrace, with a great capacity to hold and protect whatever is placed inside.
The fitted rim bound with Chinese moonseed vines is another hallmark of this craft, giving the basket a crisp and refined finish.
As time passes, the bamboo gradually turns amber.
This change in tone will also bring new expressions to the basket, whether placed in a room or holding flowers.
We hope you will enjoy these transitions as part of the basket’s long life.
Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material. Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish. We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.
About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama
Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines. From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself, every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.
Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance, while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.
These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji, combine a quiet strength with refined design.
Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop. The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.
One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen into a warm amber hue over time.
Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical. They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
