It is woven from peeled willow — slender strips made by removing the outer bark of the willow branch.
The entire basket is woven in a simple pattern, passing over and under each vertical willow rod one by one. In Japanese bamboo craft, this technique is known as “gozame-ami.”This view shows the basket from the vertical direction, where the same orderly weave continues in a regular rhythm. The willow branches are woven as they are, without being split, each one carefully worked into place to create a precise, even pattern. The handles are made in the same way, using two thick willow branches as the core and wrapping them with thinner willow. They feel gentle in the hand, offering a stable grip with very little wobble. The rim is formed by extending the vertical stakes themselves, so there is no risk of the edge coming loose on its own. After the handles are wrapped with willow, an additional X-shaped reinforcement is added where they join the basket. The base is woven with a tightly packed pattern, creating a traditional and durable construction commonly seen in European willow work. The base forms a clean, beautifully shaped oval.At times you may notice splits, cracks, or small protrusions in the willow strips, as seen in the photo. These occur naturally in the material and are not considered defects. We hope you will understand them as part of the nature of handwoven work. (The photo shown here features willow from Poland.)
Many people may associate baskets with spring and summer, but those made in colder countries like Lithuania also suit the colder seasons very well. They pair beautifully with a stole or scarf for an outing on a chilly day.
Because the basket has a straight, cylindrical shape with almost no change in width between the top and bottom, it offers a generous capacity. As its name “picnic basket” suggests, you can place your family’s lunch boxes and thermos bottles inside and take it with you to a park or any pleasant outdoor spot.It also works well as a daily shopping basket for groceries or bread. For example, it is sized to hold about two to three days’ worth of food for a family of four. With its firm and sturdy construction, it is suitable for everyday use or for carrying a full set of work tools.
Indoors, it can be used as a storage basket for small items or fabrics, and it also looks lovely when filled with dried flowers.
We often hear that as people use a basket, the things they place inside—or want to carry—naturally increase over time. With a basket of this generous size, you won’t have to worry about capacity.
We hope it will accompany you in your daily outings and shopping, and serve as a storage basket that can be left out beautifully in your home.
