This basket is woven from nypa palm, a plant that grows in the mangrove forests of Thailand.






Many of the weavers are women in their 40s to 70s, though a few men are also involved.


As with Krajood basketry, there are not many weavers among the younger generation.
Even so, the appeal of natural material products such as these is now being recognized again in Thailand, and we were told that more young people are beginning to choose baskets.


On this page, we introduce a deep open weave basket in two sizes: M and L.






After harvesting, nypa palm is thoroughly sun-dried. It needs at least three full days of good weather to dry properly under the sun.


After being thoroughly dried, the stalks and leaves are used differently depending on what is being made. For this basket, the stalks are used—shaved thin and woven by hand, guided by the feel of the artisan’s fingers.


Several stalks are grouped together, then woven from the base upward to form the sides. The stalks used are thicker and sturdier than those used for the shallow type.


This is the rim. Its beautiful, wave-like pattern is something you never tire of looking at.


Viewed from above, the rim forms a gentle arc, with a flowing, even weave continuing around it.


The basket has a raised base.


The raised base is woven in a fine pattern. Its height varies from piece to piece depending on the materials and the weaver; some are higher, while others are lower. We will send one from the stock available at the time. Please note that the height cannot be specified. A small amount of adhesive may also be used in this area to reinforce the basket. This is not a defect. We appreciate your understanding.


You may also notice occasional splits or cracks in the stalks like those shown here, but they do not affect usability. We hope you’ll understand.


Due to the nature of the material, the thin outer layer of the stalks may peel away in places, giving them a slightly scuffed appearance.

For example, it can be used as a fruit basket. Its calm tone allows the fruit to stand out. It can also be used for storing root vegetables.


This is the L size. It can, of course, be used in the same ways as the M size, and also works well as a bread basket. For example, you can place the dishes you use every morning upside down in it.


Because it has a raised base, it can also be used as a drying basket for bowls and other dishes after excess water has been wiped off. If dishes are placed in the basket while still dripping wet, mold may develop, so please be sure to wipe off the moisture first.
