Medium-thickness pieces can be used indoors as rods for hanging noren curtains or hanging scrolls. They can also be used for displays in shops or interior spaces.
Thicker pieces have a strong presence even on their own. They can be displayed as they are as interior decoration or used as large flower vases.
[90 cm (35.43″) Size]
At 90 cm (35.43″), this is a substantial length that also works well for indoor use.
For a noren curtain approximately 90 cm (35.43″) wide, we recommend Black Bamboo with a diameter of approximately 18 mm (0.71″) or more.
Thinner pieces can be used as supports for growing vegetables. Several pieces can also be combined to create indoor displays, or used as material for crafts and DIY projects that require a certain length.
Thicker pieces can be used whole or split in half for making bamboo fences or creating objects for events.
It can also be cut to the length you need, making it a good choice when you have not yet decided how you will use it or when you would like some extra length for processing.

As Black Bamboo is a natural material, each piece varies in color and pattern. You cannot choose the depth of the black color, the amount of brown coloring, or mottled patterns.

Black Bamboo Passed Down in Wakayama
In Wakayama, Black Bamboo has been valued as a local specialty for more than 100 years, since the Meiji period.
Preparing Black Bamboo for use as a material involves many steps. The process begins with going into the mountains to select, harvest, and transport the bamboo, followed by removing the branches and branch stubs, cutting the bamboo to the required length, removing the oil using heat, and straightening any bends.
The way the flame is applied and the heating time are adjusted according to the condition of each piece of bamboo, and the bamboo is straightened while it is still soft.
This work has been passed down through many years of accumulated experience and skill.
However, today, there are very few craftspeople who specialize in processing Black Bamboo.
In recent years, Hachiku bamboo, which belongs to the same group as Black Bamboo, has been flowering and dying off in many parts of Japan, and Black Bamboo has also been affected.
Under these circumstances, efforts are also underway to plant and grow new Black Bamboo on abandoned farmland, so that Black Bamboo can be passed on to future generations.
