In Beppu, Oita Prefecture, there is a vocational training center for bamboo crafts. Around ten people graduate from the center each year as budding bamboo craftspeople.
Those who enroll come from various backgrounds and age groups, and enter the world of bamboo crafts with different goals.
However, making a living from bamboo crafts today is by no means easy. Now that fewer people use bamboo craft items, this is a major challenge.
Amid these challenges, there is a craftsperson who returned to their home prefecture of Saitama after graduating from the center and continues to make bamboo crafts. They have white bamboo sent from Oita and make their pieces in Saitama.
This is a rectangular basket made from this white bamboo.
The sides of the basket are woven using the gozame-ami technique, in which vertical and horizontal bamboo strips are interlaced in an alternating over-and-under pattern. The horizontal strips alternate in width. From above, you can see how the bamboo strips are bent into smooth curves at all four corners.Shaping straight, rigid bamboo into a rectangular form is not easy. The bamboo is softened with heat and bent at the right moment. The handles and rim are secured with brass nails whose color goes well with the white bamboo. This is the inside of the rim. The brass nails are bent over on the inside, as shown here.Beads are placed between the bamboo strips of the handles and the rim, acting as buffers to reduce friction when the handles are moved.Relatively thick bamboo strips are used for the handles. The angles of the handles can be adjusted freely. The base is woven using the ikada-zoko-ami technique, which is often used for square and rectangular basket bases. It is a sturdy weave. The corners of the base are also carefully finished and smooth to the touch. It is just large enough to hold an A5 notebook. This photo shows the basket’s size when held.It can be used to hold cleaning tools such as cleaners and dusters, or remote controls. The basket also seems to be a good size for storing your child’s care supplies. It looks lovely carried as a basket bag, too.
You can also use it to store a tea set or snacks, or to keep glasses, books, a mobile phone, and other items together in the bedroom.
Since it can be carried, it also comes in handy when moving from room to room.
This rectangular white bamboo basket stands out for its crisp form and color. Please use it in a variety of settings.
